Are You Eligible for a $600 Stimulus Check?

With the release of a second stimulus bill (Consolidated Appropriations Act), follows another set of requirements for you to receive your $600 stimulus check. Two new major requirements are reflected upon the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI) and the taxpayer’s qualifying dependent children.

Congress decided to use the taxpayer’s 2019 AGI to determine eligibility of the $600 stimulus check. If the taxpayer did not file taxes for 2019, the stimulus check can be used against the 2021 tax filing. The chart below shows the income limitations for the second stimulus check without regard to qualifying children.

Filing Status Adjusted Gross Income Phase Out Amount

  • Single Taxpayer Under $75,000 $87,000

  • Head of Household Under $112,500 $124,500

  • Married, Filing Jointly Under $150,000 $174,000

This second stimulus check will be reduced by 5% for every dollar exceeding the limitation. In simple terms, the payment will be reduced by $5 for every $100 exceeding the limitation.

Furthermore, each eligible child (Age 16 & Younger) will qualify for the $600 payment. However, children above age 17 and dependent adults will not qualify for the $600 stimulus check.

For the first economic stimulus payment under the CARES Act in 2020, households that contained a single member without a Social Security number disqualified the entire household from receiving a payment. However, the CAA will allow citizen family members to receive the first and second stimulus check if they meet all other eligibility requirements.

Lastly, the $600 stimulus check will not be taxable.
